It is located approximately 35 miles south of Los Angeles. between the cities of Costa Mesa, Irvine, Newport Beach, and Santa Ana.

The service area includes 2.4 million people within 31 cities and unincorporated areas of Orange County.

Eleven commercial and four commuter airlines offer more than 100 daily, direct, non-stop departures to almost 30 United States destinations and serve more than seven million passengers annually at John Wayne Airport.

In addition, two full-service, fixed base operators and more than 700 general aviation aircraft are based at the airport. The airport has 586 tie down spaces.

John Wayne Airport's roots date back to the 1920s when aviation pioneer Eddie Martin built a private landing strip on land owned by The Irvine Company. In 1939, the County of Orange acquired the landing strip in a land swap. The airport served as a military base during World War II, returning to general aviation purposes following the war.

In 1967, the Eddie Martin Terminal was built to accommodate 400,000 commercial passengers annually. By 1970, passenger traffic had more than doubled to nearly 871,350 passengers.
