The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is an independent interstate agency created in 1986 by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the District of Colombia with the consent of the United States Congress. The Commonwealth of Virginia and the District of Colombia enacted legislation that created the Airports Authority for the purpose of operating Washington National and Washington Dulles International Airports.
The Airports Authority is governed by an 11-person Board of Directors whose members are appointed by the Governor of Virginia and Maryland, the Mayor of the District of Colombia and the President of the United States. Day-to-day operations and management to the Authority's more than 1000 employees are the responsibility of the General Manager, who serves as the Chief Executive Officer.
The Airports are self-funding with operational revenues provided by sales from concessions, aircraft landing fees, space rentals and utilities sales. Funding for the Airports Authority's nearly $2 billion Capital Development Program comes primarily from revenue generated through sales of revenue bonds.
The Airports Authority recognizes the critical role that air service plays in our nation's economic well-being, our ability to do business across national and international boundaries and as the tool to expand our cultural and intellectual horizons. We are committed to providing the best possible facilities and services to assist you in reaching your destination.
